Hood, Causey Lead Tigers to Sweep of Ole Miss, 3-0

BATON ROUGE — Regan Hood and Cara Causey combined for 29 kills as the LSU volleyball team swept past Ole Miss, 30-28, 30-22, 30-24, in a Southeastern Conference Western Division showdown on Friday night in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

With the win the Tigers improve to 12-7 overall and even their SEC record at 4-4 on the year. Ole Miss drops to 9-12 overall and 2-7 in conference action.

“This was an important win for us,” said LSU head coach Fran Flory. “This deep into the SEC schedule, it is vital for us to win every match at home and we came out and took care of business tonight. We had a long, intense week of practice and we played like it today, but we overcame some of the fatigue and came away with the big win.”

Hood led the match with 19 kills, two shy of her career-high, while hitting at a .484 clip. She also added two block assists and a service ace.

Causey recorded her sixth double-digit kill mark of her career with 10, while leading the match with four block assists. The freshman also hit at a career-high .643 clip.

“I thought our middle blockers had an excellent match,” said Flory. “Regan and Cara were really outstanding for us and were probably the difference in the match.”

Jennifer Hampton was the only other Tiger in double figures with 11 kills. Jenny Greco was the only player to record a double-digit dig total, finishing the match with 11.

LSU jumped out to the early 5-1 lead in the first game before Ole Miss tied the game at nine, aided by a 6-0 run. The game was tied six more times before the Tigers took the lead for good, 26-25. A kill by Kyra Lancon sealed the game for LSU, 30-28.

The Tigers jumped out to an early lead again in the second game, 4-0. They extended that lead to 10-3 before going up 20-9. Ole Miss went on a 10-6 run to cut the LSU lead to 26-20 before the Tigers went on to close out the game, 30-22.

As in the previous two games, LSU went up 5-1 early in the third game. The Tigers extended that lead to 10-4. Ole Miss got no closer than four points, 15-11, the rest of the way as LSU put the match away, 30-24.

The Tigers will host Mississippi State in the PMAC on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear gold as part of the Winn Dixie Gold Rush to be eligible to win great shopping sprees from Winn Dixie.
