Doubles Team Falls in ITA Regional Semifinal Round
FORT WORTH, Texas — LSU’s doubles team comprised of Rocio Fantilli and Lauren Seaman fell in the semifinal round of the 2002 Omni Hotels ITA Southwest Regional Championships on Monday here at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth, Texas.
“I’m really, really pleased with how our team performed this weekend,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “Everyone turned in some solid results and we accomplished some things that we can definitely build upon for the upcoming dual-match season.”
After reeling off five-consecutive victories, LSU’s tandem of Fantilli and Seaman suffered its first loss in exactly a month on Monday as the Lady Tigers’ pair fell short against Texas Christian’s second-seeded pair of Paty Aburto and Rosa Perez, 8-4. Aburto and Perez came into the four-day tournament as the 16th-ranked doubles combination in the country.
“We’ve been playing some really good tennis lately,” Minnis said. “It’s quite an honor to have a doubles team make it to the final four of a regional championship and I’m extremely proud of both Rocio and Lauren. I think that Lauren especially did a great job, because she displayed a lot of poise for a freshman.”
The LSU women’s tennis team will next be in action on Nov. 8, as the Lady Tigers travel to Atlanta, Ga., to compete in the 2002 Southeastern Conference Coaches Classic.
