Rutka Wins No. 1 Singles Flight at Tulane Classic
NEW ORLEANS — LSU men’s tennis player Sebastian Rutka defeated San Diego State’s Ryan Redondo, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, in the Flight One Singles Championship match of the 2002 Tulane Invitational on Sunday here at the Goldring Tennis Stadium in New Orleans.
“Hopefully, this will prove to be a good confidence booster for Seby,” said LSU head coach Jeff Brown. “He played some phenomenal tennis this weekend and he beat some pretty tough competition. I think that he’s made some major improvements in his tennis game and it showed out there today. I’m extremely proud of him.”
Rutka, LSU’s junior from Krakow, Poland, won four-consecutive matches during the three-day competition of the 2002 Tulane Invitational and upped his overall record on the season to 5-1. The Tigers’ two-year starter owns an impressive 44-26 career record in singles play.
In the top flight of the Sunday’s singles competition, LSU’s Jason Hazley defeated Middle Tennessee State’s Michael Staniak, 6-4, 7-5. Hazley, a sophomore from Bradenton, Fla., finished the weekend with a 1-3 record at the Goldring Tennis Stadium.
The LSU men’s tennis team will next be in action on Friday, Oct. 25, as the Tigers head to Lexington, Ky., for the annual Region III Championships.
