Lady Tigers Tennis Begins Play at ITA Southwest Regional
FORT WORTH, Texas — The LSU women’s tennis team will begin competition in its third tournament of the fall season on Friday as the Lady Tigers open the 2002 Omni Hotels Southwest Championships with first round singles play at 8:30 a.m. in Fort Worth, Texas.
“This has been one of the hardest-working teams that we’ve had in a while,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “All of the players work hard in practice and have a good work ethic. They are all very talented and possess a tremendous upside and this weekend will serve as a chance for our players to showcase their ability and to compete against some of the best players in the nation.”
The 2002 Omni Hotels Southwest Regional Championships is a four-day event featuring 28 of the 33 Division I schools located in Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas. The top-quality tournament is being hosted by Texas Christian University and will be comprised of 128 singles participants and 64 doubles teams.
The Omni Hotels Regional Championships date back to 1981 and have been previously known as the Rolex Regional Championships and ITA Regional Championships. The regional championships feature the top women’s players from each of the ITA’s 17 regions at the NCAA Division I level.
The singles finalists and doubles champions from the Omni Hotels Regional Championships advance to the 2002 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, held Nov. 7-10 at the Brookhaven Country Club in Dallas, Texas.
Last year in singles play, Sarah Borwell of Houston defeated Katja Kovac of Baylor, 6-0, 6-4, to advance to Nationals, while the tandem of Beverly Dawson and Irina Tereschenko (Texas Tech) captured the 9-7 win over Yasmin Fisher and Jeri Gonzales (Rice) to advance.
“We use the fall season as an opportunity for our players to compete against quality opponents and to use the techniques that they have worked on in an actual match setting,” Fotopoulos said. “This enables us as coaches to see what they have improved on and what still needs some more work.”
Five Lady Tigers will be participating in the 2002 Omni Hotels Southwest Championships this weekend. Juniors Rocio Fantilli and Bonnie White, sophomore Amanda Mang, as well as freshmen Lauren Seaman and Marina Chiarelli will begin singles play on Friday at 8:30 a.m. here in Fort Worth, Texas, at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
