Mauck, Webster Named LSWA Players of the Week

RUSTON, La. — A pair of LSU players swept this week’s Louisiana Sports Writers Association Player of the Week Awards following the Tigers impressive performance against the Florida Gators this past weekend in Gainesville.

LSU quarterback Matt Mauck won the LSWA Offensive Player of the Week while teammate and Tiger cornerback Corey Webster captured the Defensive Player of the Week honor.

Mauck led LSU to the 36-7 win over the Gators, completing 13 of 20 passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns. The Jasper, Ind., native also rushed 15 times for a career-high 67 yards with a long run of 27 yards and long completion of 39 yards. The sophomore signal caller has now thrown 88 consecutive passes without an interception.

Webster was a unanimous selection for the defensive award after recording three interceptions against Florida quarterback Rex Grossman. The junior defensive back is only the sixth player in school history to record three interceptions in a single game and the first since 1978.

The Vacherie, La., native, who also earned the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week award, added three tackles and three pass deflections during the contest. Webster returned his second interception 45 yards for a touchdown that gave LSU a 10-0 lead in the first quarter.

The LSWA players of the week are nominated by the sports information directors of the football playing institutions in the state of Louisiana.
