Heintz Named to Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week
BATON ROUGE — LSU soccer player Mandy Heintz was named to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week on Wednesday, as the Tigers’ forward used three goals and two game-winning scores to help defeat Ole Miss and Mississippi State over the weekend.
“I’m very happy for Mandy,” said LSU head coach George Fotopoulos. “It is a big honor for her to be named to a national team, but I’m sure that if you asked her, she would trade in all of these accolades for a berth in the SEC Tournament and a trip to the NCAA’s.”
Heintz, the nation’s leading scorer, has accumulated 42 total points on the season by scoring 20 goals and adding two assists. The Tigers’ junior from San Antonio, Texas, has also tied a school record for game-winning goals with eight and has found the net in an unprecedented nine-consecutive games.
Wednesday’s announcement marks the second time of the 2002 campaign that Heintz was recognized for a weekly performance. On Sept. 17, she was named the SEC Player of the Week after scoring eight goals in three games against Loyola (N.O.), Louisiana-Monroe and Nicholls State.
“All of the awards and honors that our team has received so far this season are great, but we understand that they can all be gone after one weekend,” Fotopoulos said. “We just need to keep working hard as a team and continue to focus on the goals that we have ahead of us.”
The LSU soccer team will attempt to win its 10th-consecutive contest on Friday, as the Tigers travel to Gainesville, Fla., for a Southeastern Conference matchup with Florida at 6 p.m.
