James Named to Butkus Award Watch List

BATON ROUGE — LSU linebacker Bradie James is one of 67 players nationwide named to the Butkus Award watch list, the Downtown Club of Orlando announced on Thursday.

The Butkus Award is given annually to the nation’s top collegiate linebacker. Last year, Rocky Calmus of Oklahoma won the award, which is named in honor of former Illinois and Chicago Bear NFL Hall of Fame member Dick Butkus.

James, who earned First Team All-SEC honors last year after recording 113 tackles for the Tigers, is now listed on three preseason watch lists for national awards. James has also been listed for the Lombardi Award as well as the Nagurski Award. The Lombardi Award goes to the nation’s top lineman, while Nagurski Award goes to the nation’s top defensive player.

This year also marks the third time that James has been named to the preseason watch list for the Butkus Award.

In three years with the Tigers, James has recorded 264 tackles to go along with 11 sacks. James also has 23 tackles for losses during his career.

The Butkus Award list will be trimmed to 10 semifinalists on Thursday, Oct. 17 with the three finalists being announced on Thursday, Nov. 14. The winner will be named on Friday, Dec. 13.
