West in Position to Advance at U.S. Amateur
BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. — Heath West and John Humphries, two current members of the LSU men’s golf team, completed the first day of play at the United States Amateur Championship on Monday at Oakland Hills Country Club.
West, who will be a sophomore this coming season, fired an even-par 70 on Monday at Oakland Hill’s south course, which is par 70 and totals 6,988 yards. Humphries played the north course, which is also par 70 but is 6,618 yards, and shot a 6-over par 76.
Three players fired 5-under 65s on Monday afternoon to lead the competition. Conner Robins, Alan Weant, and Zach Atkinson each are tied for first overall with 65s. Six golfers shot 3-under 67s and 17 other players shot under par for the day. West is tied for 27th with 13 others at even-par after one round.
Humphries will tee off at 9:05 a.m. Tuesday on the south course’s No. 1 tee. West will tee off at 7:58 on Tuesday on the No. 1 tee.
Competition will continue on Tuesday will stroke play and then the 312-man field will be trimmed to the 64 lowest scores will advance to match play.
