Francique Sets Grenadian National Record
POZNAN, Poland — Former LSU track standout Allenye Francique blew the doors off a field of talented competitors Sunday at the Zywiec Cup, winning the open 400 meters with a blistering time of 44.72 to set a new Grenada national record.
Francique’s PR mark not only put him atop the podium for the second straight week, he won the 400 at the Folksam Grand Prix in Sweden five days ago, it also helped him outdistance Olympic silver medallist Alvin Harrison (USA, 45.02) who placed second in the event. Francique’s time was an impressive .15-second improvement on his previous personal-best mark.
In other international news, former LSU All-American Walter Davis recorded a fourth-place finish at the Norwich Union Challenge in Glasgow, Scotland, over the weekend. Davis jump of 54-6 kept him just out of the medal hunt as Jonathan Edwards jumped 57-5 to win the event and Igor Spasovkhodskiy (56-8) and Phillip Idowu (56-7) finished second and third, respectively.
Both Francique and Davis will return to action later this week as Francique runs in the San Sebastian Grand Prix Tuesday, August 20 in Spain and Davis jumps in the Norwich British Union Open Friday, Aug. 23 in London.
