Volleyball Begins 2000 Season in Colorado
BOULDER, Colo. — The LSU volleyball will open the 2000 season on Friday at 6 p.m. at the Colorado PowerBar Invitational against Santa Clara.
The Tigers are looking to take the next step in the rebuilding process after recording their first winning, 17-15, season last year since 1995. The Broncos are coming off a 21-11 season that saw them reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago.
“Santa Clara is a very good team. Their coach is very good and they have a good balanced team,” said LSU coach Fran Flory. “I think it’s a good opportunity to see we rank on a national level. They are a team that will get some national recognition and that will allow us a chance to play our way into that spotlight.”
This will be the first match for the Tigers in three years that won’t feature Meg Norwood and Kelly Thompson in the starting lineup. Replacing them are sophomores Rachel Vogt and Lauren Cuyler, who started in 1998 before taking a medical redshirt this past season.
“The new lineup gives us a few question marks. We have a few people in Lauren O’Connor, Meghan Bedford and Meagan Davis that have had a lot of experience. However, they haven’t had to carry the offensive load in the past with the exception of Meagan. For us to be successful this weekend, we have to play like a veteran team.”
In the other match on Friday, host Colorado will face Central Florida with the winners meeting in the final on Sunday at 8 p.m. The consolation match on Sunday will take place at 6 p.m. between the two losers.
