Soccer Opens 2000 Season with 4-0 Victory
TROY, Ala. — The LSU women’s soccer team began its 2000 season under first-year head coach George Fotopoulos on a high note Friday afternoon with a 4-0 shutout over Troy State at the Trojan Soccer Field.
“We didn’t play very well today, but I am happy that we played well enough to win,” said Fotopoulos. “It is always good to start the first game of the season off with a win. We scored four nice goals, and I am very pleased with the victory.”
LSU now moves to 1-0 for the season with Troy State falling to 0-1.
Dean scored her second goal in the 15th minute with a double header from Mitnick and Mandy Heintz.
To start the second half scoring, Mitnick turned a penalty kick into a goal for LSU in the 60th minute.
LSU converted yet another corner kick to score its fourth goal of the match. True freshman Elizabeth Marschall, a Baton Rouge native, scored the first goal of her college career to finish off the scoring for the Tigers. Marschall’s goal came on a header off the corner by Mitnick with 10 minutes left to play.
Tiger goalies Bryna Warnock and Bonnie Otillio combined for the shutout of the Trojans. Otillio had one save on the night. Trojan goalie Jessica Murphy stopped 10 Tiger shots, however, LSU outshot its opponent 25-1.
On Sunday, the Tigers travel to Monroe to face the Indians of Louisiana-Monroe in a match at 1 p.m. LSU returns home to host the LSU Invitational on Sept. 1 and 3.
