Soccer Kicks Off 2000-01 Season vs. Troy State

BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s soccer team kicks off the 2000-01 LSU athletics season as well as its 2000 season under first-year head coach George Fotopoulos on the road against the Troy State Trojans at 4 p.m. Friday.

Fotopoulos begins his quest to revive a team that has suffered through three consecutive losing seasons and went 4-15-1 a year ago.? He came to LSU following a two year stint at the University of Tampa where he posted a 20-14-1.

“I feel we are going in as the underdog here,” said Fotopoulos. “We have to be as competitive as possible to stay in this game. Normally, a team does not play well in their first game, but we must play well enough in this game to win.? It is very important for our team to start off with a victory.”

LSU enters the new season with a roster of 27 players that have undergone a rigorous training schedule in the pre-season.? There are 10 veterans on the Tiger squad, including All-Southeastern Conference selection Ashley Mitnick and team captain Kara Dean.

The team welcomes a total of 17 newcomers led by freshmen team captains, Elizabeth Marschall and Laura Klatter.

The Trojans of Troy State went 3-14-1 in 1999 and return seven starters from last year’s squad.? LSU and Troy State have never met in action before.

Following Friday’s match, The Tigers will travel to Louisiana-Monroe on Sunday to take on the Indians at 1 p.m., before returning home for the LSU Invitational at the LSU Soccer Complex next Friday.
