School's In: Tigers Begin Once-A-Day Routine

BATON ROUGE — The LSU football team met for a single afternoon workout on Monday afternoon, the first day of classes for LSU students.

“When it is the first day of school, the program changes and the schedule changes,” LSU coach Nick Saban said. “Everyone is a creature of habit, so when you go out to practice some guys feel a little sick. For the first practice during school, I was pleased with the way we worked through it.”

Junior quarterback Rohan Davey took limited reps while continuing to recover from knee surgery. Davey is battling junior Josh Booty for the starting nod in the season opener.

“I think the most important thing for us right now is for us to get two players healthy,” said Saban. “We are moving to Josh and Rohan getting more of the reps because that is the direction we want to move in.”

Unable to practice due to injury were running back LaBrandon Toefield (ankle), offensive lineman Brandon Winey (leg) and quarterback Craig Nall (hamstring).

LSU will practice in the afternoon on Tuesday before holding an afternoon scrimmage on Wednesday.

The Tigers open the season on September 2 at 7 p.m. against Western Carolina in Tiger Stadium. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling the LSU ticket office at 388-2184 or visiting the LSU athletics homepage at www.LSUsports.net.

PRACTICE NOTES:

  • After severely injuring his knee in Spring Drills, Ed Dangerfield (WR) ran through a few receiving drills without pads for the first time. Dangerfield, who was listed as “doubtful to return this season,” has assumed a leadership role off the field for the 2000 Tigers, but looks to make a dramatic recovery and return before his junior season ends. He redshirted the 1997 season.
  • The following players attended practice but did not dress out due to injury: (hamstring), (sprained ankle), (bruised fibula), Dwayne Pierce (knee), Dangerfield (knee), Shaun Wynn.
  • The following players practiced with a “red shirt” on Monday: Fred Booker (hamstring), Solomon Lee (knee), Jeremy Lawrence and Kareem Mitchell.
  • The Tigers will practice Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. (what Saban called “the worst time to practice”…”but the most convenient time”) and scrimmage for the final time this fall on Wednesday afternoon.
