Duncan Qualifies for U.S. Amateur, Wins Opener 3-2

PORTLAND, Ore. — LSU women’s golfer Meredith Duncan advanced through two rounds of medal play Monday and Tuesday to advance to the final 64 golfers and has won her opening match, 3-2, over Mexico’s Marcela Leon in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship here at the Waverly Country Club.

Duncan now advances to face Leigh Anne Hardin in the second round of match play set for Wednesday afternoon in the most important tournament in women’s amateur golf.

Duncan qualified with consistent rounds of 74-76 for an 8-over total of 150, good enough for a tie for 28th place. It took a score of 12 over par to make a playoff for the final spots in the 64-player match play bracket.

Hardin from Martinsville, Ind., a freshman to be at Duke University, was the low qualifier at 2-under 140 (69-71). The par for the Waverly layout is 71.

If Duncan is able to get past the second round of match play, she may be featured on ESPN’s coverage of the event which begins on Thursday.
